a. Characteristics of a Academic Advisor
The minimum characteristics of a Academic Advisor:
1. Learning and Responding to Students
A Academic Advisor is always learning and strives to find better answers to all student questions rather than merely giving lectures in class.
2. Seeking New Knowledge and Supportive Parties
A Academic Advisor must have the habit of continuously seeking new knowledge and identifying other parties who can support student learning in their classes. Additionally, they should engage in research projects involving students to provide them with hands-on experience.
3. Reducing Lecture Time
The traditional lecture time should be minimized, with more focus on discussions and group work among students.
b. Definition of Academic Advisor (PP)
A Academic Advisor is a Lecturer appointed and assigned by the Study Program/Department. They serve as mentors, companions, advisors, and academic as well as non-academic counselors who motivate and inspire an individual student or a group of students throughout their learning process at IPB, from the first semester until they graduate from a study program at their respective educational level.
A Academic Advisor plays a role in facilitating students’ academic journey at IPB by providing guidance, motivation, inspiration, and approval regarding academic and non-academic matters, overall study planning, multi-activity and multi-channel learning (MBKM/ Emancipated Learning), from the first semester until graduation.
c. Objectives of Mentoring Services
- To understand students’ potential abilities so they can maximize their capabilities in following the educational process at IPB and successfully complete their studies.
- To detect early any obstacles and difficulties students face in following IPB’s educational process and to resolve or assist in overcoming them effectively so that these challenges do not become barriers to their studies.
- To ensure compliance with applicable procedures and regulations that facilitate students in completing their studies. To ensure effective mentoring, both students and Academic Advisors must understand their respective roles, authority, and responsibilities.
